A Pentecostal bishop on Sunday told a rabbi and an imam that the U.S. was a “Christian nation” that was bridging religious divisions because Christians would “let” other faiths worship and “we’re not going to persecute you.”

Maybe I’m seeing this out of context. But when I read that “we’re not going to persecute you” line, I expected it to be followed up with a polite request for some “insurance” payment

We believe this is to be a Christian nation. We feel like we’ve been persecuted in the places we came from,

Funny. Most in this country who call this a “christian nation” use that as a pretext to insist the first amendment doesn’t mean what it says, therefore its okay to push christianity in public schools or bully gay kids or whatever else “isn’t” persecution.

Btw, who was doing the persecuting in “the places we came from?” Other christians, perhaps? On that note:

Imam Suhaib Webb, however, reminded Jackson that Christians persecuted Christians during the early days of the United States, while Jews and Muslims lived together in Harmony in Spain.

Ouch! Cut his ignorant balls off, why don’t you?

BTW, is the US of A old enough that the Civil War counts as “the early days?” Or maybe WW2? My point is that “christianity” as a united multi-sect group is a much more recent invention that most people today realize. For most of american history, it was kinda taboo to talk about religion because as soon as someone heard you held a different version of an otherwise same faith, it was on. Christians hated one another over little differences until someone figured out that it takes a common enemy to unite them, such as abortion or communism.

And thats why for most of US history, contrary to contemporary belief, nobody referred to America as a “christian” nation. That word, or at least that particular meaning of it, did not yet exist.

I am pretty sure Pentecostals did not exist at the time of the Founding Fathers. It was founded in about 1900 or so.

I have noticed a tendency for modern day conservative Christians who have almost modern origins invent some notion of history where the Founding Fathers were just like them. I assure you Thomas Jefferson did not speak in tongues nor did George Washington nor Ben Franklin.

There is a lack of historical knowledge amongst these right wing Christians. Pentecostals were founded in 1900 and I don’t even know if the Founding Fathers would have considered them Christians but they probably would have left them alone.

“while Jews and Muslims lived together in Harmony in Spain.”

After they were killed, banished, or forcefully converted during the renaissance.

Iberia was under the Caliphate until Ferdinand and Isabella’s reconquista… which happened the same time the Renaissance was getting rolling.

And things didn’t get better for the Jews under Ferdinand and Isabella.
